Editorial Policy
Our readers are often dealing with a suspension, a large insurance bill or a decision that affects their family. They need information they can rely on. This page explains how we produce our guides.
Who writes our guides
Articles are published by the Plain Policy Guide Editorial Team. We cover a deliberately narrow area, car insurance (with a focus on high-risk drivers) and life insurance, so that we can follow the rules and data in these areas closely.
Our sources, in order of preference
- Primary legal sources: state motor vehicle agencies, state statutes and administrative rules, state insurance regulators, the NAIC and the IRS.
- Official data: government statistics and regulatory filings.
- Industry research: published studies and rate analyses from established insurance data publishers. When we cite a price or average, we name the publisher and the date of the data, because prices change and different publishers use different methods.
- Insurer information: insurers' own published descriptions of their products, used for product features rather than for claims about price or quality.
Each guide lists its sources at the end so you can check them yourself.
Fact-checking
Before publication, every rule, fee, limit and figure in a guide is checked against the sources listed with it. When official sources conflict or are unclear, we say so in the article instead of guessing, and we tell readers to confirm with the agency involved.
Use of AI tools
We use AI tools to help with research and drafting. AI does not decide what we publish. Every article is reviewed and checked against its listed sources before it goes live, and we are responsible for everything we publish.
Updates
Each guide shows the date it was last checked. We review our guides regularly and update them when laws, fees or published data change. Minor edits, such as fixing a typo, may not change the date.
Corrections
If we get something wrong, we fix it. Readers can report errors through our contact page. When a correction changes the meaning of a guide, we update the article and its "last updated" date.
Independence
Our content is not written or approved by advertisers. Advertising does not determine which topics we cover or what our guides say. If we ever include partner links, they will be clearly disclosed. See how we make money.
Limits of our guides
Our guides explain general rules. They cannot account for every detail of your record or your case. They are not legal or insurance advice; see our disclaimer.
